Maintaining an active ecosystem of open-source projects is a challenge, but doing so while holding a full-time position in a regulated industry—where the day-to-day topics are mostly unrelated—requires a specific kind of discipline. Currently, I oversee several projects: office-stamper, the asciidoc tooling module, imageio plugins, and a custom maven-skin.

Standard line coverage can be an illusion. I rely on PITest for mutation testing. By intentionally injecting faults into the code, I can verify that my tests actually catch issues. A high mutation score gives me the confidence that my safety net is real.

2. Codebase Scanners: Qodana, SonarSource, and Beyond

I use scanners like Qodana, SonarQube, and CodeQL to act as a second pair of eyes. These tools propose changes and warn me regularly about potential issues.

  • Qodana provides the same deep inspections I use in IntelliJ, but in CI.
  • CodeQL ensures security by tracing data flows, critical for a project like office-stamper that evaluates templates.

The key is to keep the windows for review easy to slip into. I read the scanner outputs, decide whether to apply the changes, and move on.

3. Automated Dependency Hygiene

Renovate handles the grunt work of checking for updates. It opens PRs, groups minor updates, and lets me merge them with a single click once CI goes green.


Looking Ahead: Documentation & Community

Documentation is often the first thing to suffer in solo projects. I recently noticed the Maven Doxia Book Maven Plugin needed some update for my personal documentation websites. Despite it being retired, I plan to adopt and adapt it to ensure my projects remain well-documented and accessible.
